Hemp produces over 100 cannabinoids, each interacting differently with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). Below are the most notable cannabinoids found in hemp and their potential uses.
CBD (Cannabidiol)
The most common cannabinoid in hemp. Non-intoxicating and widely used for promoting relaxation, stress relief, and recovery support. Found in oils, gummies, topicals, and more.
CBG (Cannabigerol)
Often called the “mother cannabinoid” because most cannabinoids start as CBG. Believed to support focus, digestive balance, and energy levels. Typically found in smaller amounts, making it more rare.
CBC (Cannabichromene)
A non-psychoactive compound that may influence mood regulation and inflammation balance. Often paired with CBD and CBG for broader effects.
CBN (Cannabinol)
Formed as THC naturally breaks down. Mildly psychoactive but not intoxicating at hemp levels. Best known for its role in sleep and relaxation blends.
THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)
Present only in trace amounts (<0.3%) in hemp. While it’s the main psychoactive compound in marijuana, hemp’s THC levels are too low to cause intoxication but may enhance other cannabinoids through the entourage effect.
THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid)
The raw, acidic form of THC found in fresh hemp. THCA itself is non-intoxicating, but when heated through smoking, vaping, or cooking, it converts into psychoactive THC. Some use it in raw form (like juicing or tinctures) for potential wellness benefits without the high.
THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)
Known as the “diet cannabinoid.” Early research suggests it may influence appetite regulation, metabolism, and energy. Found in smaller amounts compared to CBD or THC.
CBDV (Cannabidivarin)
Structurally similar to CBD but with unique potential. Being studied for its role in neurological conditions and overall brain health. Non-intoxicating.
Delta-8 THC
A naturally occurring form of THC with milder psychoactive effects compared to Delta-9 THC (the traditional THC). Often described as offering relaxation and calmness without heavy intoxication.
Delta-10 THC
Another rare form of THC, thought to provide a more uplifting, energizing effect compared to Delta-8. Less researched but growing in popularity.
HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol)
A hydrogenated cannabinoid, created when hydrogen is added to THC molecules. Users often report effects that feel somewhere between CBD’s calmness and THC’s euphoria.
